2020 FAPA Board Members
Shezal Lalani, Chairperson
Shezal is an Accounting professional who currently works in the finance function at Kira Systems, a machine learning based tech startup in Toronto. She supports different facets of the function including financial reporting, planning & budgeting, and finance operations. Prior to joining Kira Systems, Shezal worked within the Consumer Industrial Markets Audit Practice at KPMG where she earned her CPA, CA designation. Shezal holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University.
Zahra Hasmani, Secretary & Treasurer
Zahra holds an undergraduate degree in Honors of Business Administration, with a specialization in Finance from the University of Guelph. She previously held a role at TD Wealth Management in Mutual Funds Tax and is currently employed at CIBC Mellon as a Senior Fund Accountant.
Zain Nathoo, Young Finance Professionals Portfolio
Zain is a Real Estate Finance professional who currently works at Greybrook Realty Partners. Prior to joining Greybrook, Zain was an Associate Director at RBC and also worked at Dundee Capital Markets in the Equity Research Group covering a portfolio of publicly traded Real Estate Investment Trusts. Zain holds a Master of Science in Real Estate Development from Columbia University and a BBA from York University’s Schulich School of Business.
Sania Lalani, Design & Data
Sania graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2018 with a Bachelor in Business Administration. Since then, she has worked within the Real Estate Public Audit practice at Deloitte, where she is now an Assistant Manager. Sania is a CPA candidate, on track to becoming licensed in 2020, and has successfully completed her CFE.
Sarmad Jaffer, Calgary Board Representative
Sarmad holds an MBA from Cornell University and is a CFA charterholder. He currently holds a role in the Transfer Pricing & Complex Financial Instruments Pricing group at Grant Thorntorn. Prior to this Sarmad held several roles, including a consulting role at TD in Credit Underwriting and a Transfer Pricing role at PwC as a Senior Associate.
Iman Kara, Vice Chairperson
Iman graduated from the Schulich School of Business and held a role at PwC Canada, where she obtained her CPA, CA designation while working in the assurance practice, specializing in real estate. She continued her career development in the real estate industry at Allied Properties REIT, overseeing financial reporting, compliance, and strategic planning components and expanded her role during her three years to Senior Manager. She recently transitioned to Asset Management at Brookfield, where she is currently employed.
Munir Makani, Experienced Finance Professionals Portfolio
Munir holds an MBA from the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. He is a CFA Charterholder, a licensed CA and a FCCA. Munir currently works as a commercial banker with RBC, where he serves over 75 clients in the healthcare sector across the GTA.
Shaamikh Virani, Students Portfolio
Shaamikh is currently completing his Masters of Accounting at the University of Waterloo, were he also completed his undergraduate studies in the Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) Program. Shaamikh completed all of his co-op terms at KPMG, within their audit practice. He will be returning to KPMG full-time in October 2020.
Leila Keshavjee, Entrepreneuship Portfolio
Leila graduated from the University of Toronto’s Kinesiology program in 2016. Shortly after graduating, she founded her start-up, Happy Pops, a company which creates all natural ice pops. Leila made an appearance on CBC’s Dragons Den Season 13 with Happy Pops, where she successfully secured funding for her business.
Malik Ali, Past Chairperson
Malik is currently the Vice President of Audit at OMERS. Prior to this role, he served as the Senior Director of Audit, Finance, Treasury & Risk at CIBC as well as a Controller at Credit Suisse. Malik is a CPA, CA and a CFA Charterholder.
